Career Summary

Biography

Michael Ewans (MA Oxford, PhD Cambridge) was originally appointed to a Lectureship in Classics at the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1973. On the foundation of the Department of Drama in 1974 he was invited to lecture in that discipline both on the Greek theatre and on modern drama and opera since Ibsen and Wagner. He transferred full-time to become Associate Professor and Head of Drama in 1981, and began his series of three three-year cycles of productions of Greek tragedy and comedy, in his own new translations and in a half-size replica of the original performance space, in 1983 with Aeschylus’ Libation Bearers. Subsequently he was a Visiting Professor in the interdisciplinary University Professors’ Program at Boston University in 1986-7, Warden – the first administrator and academic program developer – of the Central Coast (now Ourimbah) Campus 1989-1993, and Assistant Dean (Research) in charge of developing postgraduate research programs in Music 1995-2009. Between 1998 and 2004 he directed a series of chamber operas for the then Faculty of Music, before returning to the Greek theatre and directing three comedies by Aristophanes in 2005-9. His last project before retirement was a production in 2011 of his own translation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck (this translation was also used by Omnibus Theatre in London for their centenary production of the play in 2013).

Michael Ewans is now an Honorary Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Science at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Before retiring from the Chair of Drama in 2011 he specialized in directing plays and chamber operas, translating Greek tragedy and comedy, and writing books and articles which explore how operas and dramas work in the theatre. He is the author of Janácek’s Tragic Operas (1977), Wagner and Aeschylus: the ‘Ring’ and the ‘Oresteia’ (1982), Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck (1989), and Opera from the Greek: Studies in the Poetics of Appropriation (2007). He has also published a complete set of accurate and actable translations of Aeschylus and Sophocles in four volumes with theatrical commentaries (1995-2001), followed by two volumes of comedies by Aristophanes, also in his own new translations with theatrical commentaries (2011-12). He has written chapters on the reception of classical drama into opera for the Wiley-Blackwell Handbook to the Reception of Greek Drama  (2017) and the Brill Companion to the Reception of Aeschylus. His book Performing Opera: a practical guide for singers and directors was  published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama in 2016. And also in 2016 he was the translator of Euripides' original play, Dramaturg and Assistant Director for Carl Caulfield's new play Hecuba Reimagined. This was professionally produced by Stray Dogs Theatre Company in October 2016. He was editor and contributor to the Antiquity volume of A Cultural History of Comedy, published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama in 2020. Since then he has published  Staging Ancient Greek Plays: a Practical Guide and Euripides: 'Medea' translation and theatrical commentary (Routledge, 2022). This was based on his professional production of the play with Stray Dogs Theatre Company in 2020, which was followed by a professional production of Aristophanes' Lysistrata in 2020; that was the subject of an article in Practitioners' Voices in Classical Reception Studies. He published a fully revised and expanded edition of his translation with commentary on Aeschylus' Oresteia in 2024, and has just completed the MS of a new book, Sexually Transgressive Heroines: eight music dramas 1902-37.

Michael Ewans is currently supervising a PhD student whose topic is sexual violence in Geek myth, literature and law.  He was elected in 2005 to a Fellowship of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Research Expertise
I am an expert on the ancient Greek theatre - both tragedy and comedy, with a special interest in translation and staging - and on opera, with particular reference to twentieth-century operas and to performance.

Teaching Expertise

Since retirement I have taught two undergraduate courses, Greek Tragedy and Myth and Fairy Tale.

Administrative Expertise
I have served as head of my main discipline of Drama, as Warden (academic program developer) at the Central Coast (now Ourimbah) Campus, as Assistant Dean (research) in the former Faculty of Music, and as Drama Performance Co-ordinator. My principal committee work has been in the area of research and research training.

Collaborations
I research in three areas; the translation and staging of Greek tragedy and comedy; the expressionist theatre and opera of the period 1900-37 in Europe; and opera, with particular reference to operas based on Greek epic and tragedy, and to the staging of operas from Gluck and Mozart to Britten and Tippett.

This is a fully revised new edition of Michael Ewans' 1995 English translation of the¿Oresteia, taking into account the extensive work published on the trilogy in recent years. Accompanying this lucid, accurate and actable translation is a substantial introduction, outlining the festival setting of the plays, the original performance conditions and performance style, the form and meaning of the trilogy, the issues surrounding the act of translation, and finally a survey of some major productions since 1980. The text itself is a thoroughly competitive translation into modern English verse, now significantly revised in the light of recent scholarship on the text. It is followed by a theatrical commentary on each scene and chorus, providing unique insights into how the plays might have been staged in ancient Athens and how they can be staged today. The book also includes notes on the translation, two glossaries of names and Greek terms, selected further reading, and a chronology of Aeschylus' life and times. Aeschylus'¿Oresteia: Translation and Theatrical Commentary¿is the most comprehensive English edition of Aeschylus' masterpiece, and this new edition fully meets the needs of teachers, students and practitioners working on the trilogy as well as those interested in ancient Greek drama and literature more broadly.

Merging the theoretical framework with the practical elements of staging an ancient Greek play, this indispensable guide offers directors and actors an excellent starting point for mounting their production. Considering the conditions of ancient Greek performance and the conventions of the Greek theatre, the book examines large questions, including those related to ancient Greek values, myth and the individual ('characterization'), and the gods and fate - all of which must be taken into consideration when approaching a contemporary production. This practical guide also explores with analysed examples, the issues that today's theatre-makers should consider in order to successfully stage ancient Greek drama. These topics include: - choice of translation - setting - costumes - masks - mode of delivery - acting style for both tragedy and comedy - handling of the chorus - solutions to staging Greek drama.

Drawing together contributions from scholars in a wide range of fields inside Classics and Drama, this volume traces the development of comedic performance and examines the different characteristics of Greek and Roman comedy. Although the origins of comedy are obscure, this study argues that comedic performances were at the heart of Graeco-Roman culture from around 486 BCE to the mid first century BCE. It explores the range of comedies during this period, which were fictional dramas that engaged with the political and social concerns of ancient society, and also at times with mythology and tragedy. The volume centres largely around the surviving work of Aristophanes and Menander in Athens, and Plautus and Terence in Rome, but authors whose plays survive only in fragments are also discussed. Performances and plays drew on a range of forms, including satire and fantasy, and were designed to entertain and amuse their audiences while also asking them to question issues of morality, privilege and class. Each chapter takes a different theme as its focus: form, theory, praxis, identities, the body, politics and power, laughter and ethics. These eight different approaches to ancient comedy add up to an extensive, synoptic coverage of the subject.
