Building community in nursing education
Moving to a new country is never easy, but for Shruti, it’s been one of her best decisions.
Originally from India, Shruti moved to Newcastle to study a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus. There, she found a place where she could learn, grow, and feel at home.
“Newcastle is the perfect place to enjoy life while studying,” Shruti says.
She was drawn to the University for its strong reputation in health and nursing, but what really stood out was the friendly and supportive environment.
With both of her parents working as doctors, Shruti grew up surrounded by care and compassion.
“I’ve always watched my parents care for patients. I developed that same passion and nursing felt like the perfect path to combine that with a meaningful career.”
Now, she is gaining hands-on experience through clinical placements, where she is building confidence and practical skills in real-world healthcare settings.
When it comes to study, the library is her go-to space, especially the study rooms.
“I often book study rooms for focused solo study or to collaborate with friends during exams. The quiet, structured environment really helps me stay productive.”
Living on campus in her first year helped her settle in quickly, make new friends, and ease into university life.
One of Shruti’s favourite parts of her journey has been joining
“ISANU celebrates Indian festivals like Holi and Diwali and hosts Bollywood Nights. It gave me a strong sense of community.” Shruti is now the Secretary of ISANU, helping other Indian students feel welcome and connected.
Alongside her placements, Shruti works part-time at an aged care facility and tutors' other students, which was made available to her via the Career Hub, the University’s job and career support platform.
With big dreams for the future, Shruti is planning to pursue her Masters and specialise in surgical nursing.
Shruti shares some advice to future students, “Be open to new experiences and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Use campus resources like the library and attend orientation. It is the best way to make friends and get familiar with university life.”
She also recommends PASS (Peer Assisted 榴莲成人app下载 Sessions) for students finding core subjects like Human Bioscience (HUBS) challenging.
Shruti’s experience shows how university life is about more than just classes, it's about finding community, purpose, and belonging.
