We need the skills and knowledge to innovate for tomorrow and an understanding of today’s big questions and how they affect everyone. However, women still hold far fewer leadership positions than men particularly in STEM fields where only 18 per cent of leadership positions are held by women. We're addressing gender equity through our work with the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) pilot and the Male Champions of Change (MCC) initiative. This scholarship is one way for us to address gender diversity.

  • Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Renewable Energy Engineering (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours)

The scholarship tenure is for the 4 year duration of the program. Combined degrees will be supported for an additional 5th year where both programs are from the eligible list.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be enrolled in 1st year of an eligible Engineering degree program with University of Newcastle.
  • Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
  • Have an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 75 or higher.
  • Be female.
  • Be an Australian citizen.
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • The application will include a free text question asking you to outline your interest in associated future opportunities with this donor and/or Industry partner.

You will have the option to provide up to 3 documents demonstrating your academic achievements and commitment to leadership within your community.

  • A current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.

Benefit

This scholarship provides a total benefit of $40,000 up to a maximum 4-year tenure, provided ongoing eligibility is met. The scholarship provides $10,000 annually paid as $5,000 in each semester.

Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.

Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.

The Selection Committee will consider prior academic achievement, interest in the relevant career sector, community leadership, and involvement with extra-curricular activities.

Selection will be made by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Engineering, Science and Environment and one CSIRO representative.

The Selection Panel will communicate the details of successful recipients to the Scholarships Office and all applicants will be notified of an outcome via email within 6 weeks of the closing date.
