Infrabuild Steel and WireEstablishment
This scholarship has been established by Infrabuild Steel and Infrabuild Wire.
Infrabuild Steel and Infrabuild Wire are part of the GFG Alliance international group of business and are Australia’s premier manufacturers of Steel and Wire in Australia and New Zealand.
Successful scholars will be invited to either Infrabuild Steel’s Newcastle Rod Mill (3 scholarships in 2026) or Infrabuild Wire’s Newcastle Wire Mill (1 scholarship in 2026).
The Rod Mill has the capacity to produce 860,000 tonnes of steel rod coils to feed the wire, reinforcing and spring steel markets. The Wire Mill has the capacity to produce 160,000 tonnes of wire coils, prefabricated fencing and barb wire rolls.
Scholarship recipients may have the opportunity to apply for paid vacation work with InfraBuild Steel or Infrabuild Wire whilst studying with University of Newcastle. It is the intention to build ongoing relationships with the successful scholars during their degree program which may include a final year research project relevant Infrabuild and potential career opportunities on graduation.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Be enrolled in 2nd year of a B Chemical Engineering, B Mechanical Engineering, B Mechatronics Engineering or B Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle.
- Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
- Demonstrate academic achievement by having a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or higher in your current program.
- Be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident (including holders of a permanent humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens with permanent residency).
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- The application will include a free text question asking you to outline your interest in associated future opportunities with this donor and/or Industry partner.
Any applicant that does not submit the required documentation, including documentary evidence, will not be considered for selection.
As part of your application, you will need to agree to the terms and conditions regarding privacy and collection of personal information set out in the Declaration and Authority at the start of your application.
Benefit
The scholarship provides a total benefit of $15,000 over a 3-year tenure provided ongoing eligibility for the term of the scholarship.
The scholarship will be paid as $2500 in semester one and semester two each year.
Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
Selection will be made by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment Selection Committee which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Engineering, Science and Environment. Representatives from Infrabuild Steel will be invited to join the Selection Committee. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview with representatives from Infrabuild Steel and Infrabuild Wire.
