This is a donor-funded scholarship from Michael Griffiths.

Establishment

This scholarship was established from the estate of Patricia Jensen, nee Smith. Born at Muswellbrook, Patricia discovered a love for Literature early in her formal schooling.

Having attained formal qualifications at the Old Tighes Hill Campus, she had a long and distinguished teaching career in English History. She was a valued member of the English staff at the secondary schools of Scone, Taree and Whitebridge. Literature, Arts, Music and Politics all exerted major influences at various stages of her life. Patricia was a resident of Cooks Hill for many years and was an avid patron and supporter of the nearby cultural institutions. Her interest in politics saw her serve a term as secretary for the Newcastle branch of the Labor Party. Her traits as a mentor, confidant and friend were much valued by all close associates.

In Patricia’s legacy, this scholarship provides the recipient with some tangible encouragement, contributing to the success of their desired academic outcome.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be enrolled in any year of the Bachelor of Science (including combined programs) with the University of Newcastle.
  • Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
  • Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, long-term medical condition, a disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, and regional/remote disadvantage.
  • Equity scholarships will also consider applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
  • Have an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 75 or higher for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 for continuing students.
  • Be an Australian citizen.
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational challenges and personal circumstances. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
  • Up to 3 documents which demonstrate your academic achievements, such as awards, participation in enrichment and travel programs or internships, academic competitions, portfolio or cv. Transcripts are not required for UON students.

Benefit

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $7000, paid as two lump sums of $3500 in semester 1 and 2.

Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.

Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
