“I am grateful for the assistance and direction given to me by the University of Newcastle as an undergraduate in the 1960’s and 70’s.
Along with other Civil Engineering graduates of 1973 I am pleased that financial gains made while enjoying a truly satisfying career as a Civil Engineer has enabled me to give back to our industry by making available these scholarships to help reduce the loan burden of graduating Civil Engineering students”

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Be enrolled in 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor of Civil Engineering undergraduate program (including Combined programs) with the University of Newcastle.
- Demonstrate academic progress with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher and maintain this for the duration of scholarship.
- Have completed a minimum of 160 Units of your degree
- Have grown up in the Hunter Region.
- Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, long-term medical condition, a disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, and regional/remote disadvantage.
- Equity scholarships will also consider applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
- Be an Australian citizen.
- Not have previously received this scholarship.
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- You may be required to provide documents to support your educational challenges and personal circumstances. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
Benefit
This scholarship is for a term of one year. This scholarship must be taken up in the semester for which it is awarded.
The scholarship provides a total benefit of $10,000 to be paid as two lump sums of $5,000 after the relevant census dates.
Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on an assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
