The Conservatorium

The Conservatorium of Music celebrates more than 70 years of music education in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region. From its humble beginnings in huts in Civic Park, "the Con" now boasts state of the art concert and teaching facilities located in the University of Newcastle's thriving city campus.

As well as providing lessons in classical music performance, we embrace all styles of music. You will hear rock, jazz, pop, folk and electronic sounds emanating from our spaces and studios.

Led by Conservatorium Coordinator Sue Carson, our staff are experts in their field. Whether you want to learn an instrument, take classes in music reading and writing or join one of our community ensembles, we will facilitate your music needs.

We also welcome all members of the community to come and enjoy our concerts. Revel in the experience of live music, see outstanding national and international artists, or support our locally-grown talent.

The Harold Lobb Concert Hall is a premier facility, which is in constant demand for concerts by local, interstate and international artists. This 348 seat concert hall is also available for University staff and students, as well as members of the public to hire for performances, concerts and special events.
